What is the Holy Spirit? (Commentary)

Hello, In this answer: What is the Holy Spirit? it is proffered that Gabriel and the Holy Spirit are one in the same. However, while including some of Luke chapter 1, the article quite explicitly excluded this most-relevant verse (the material within the []s is my addition) – Luk 1:35 (YLT): “And the messenger [Gabriel] answering said to her: ‘The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;” Clarification on the nature of this omission would be nice. Thank you for your time. May the truth flow… One Love, David.

Salaam,

Thank you for your comment.

The posted answer was trying to clarify the truth about the holy spirit or ghost, mentioned in both the Qur’an and the Bible.

The arguments followed therein were that monotheism is the common message of all prophets, that the trinity dogma was an innovation gradually introduced to Christianity – away from the teachings of Jesus. Consequently, the decisive reference should be the Qur’an, the only authentic unaltered word of the One God.

Consistently, the Qur’an mentions the holy spirit referring to the angel Gabriel, sent to support and guide the prophets, including Muhammad, Jesus and others (peace be upon them all). Please read in the holy Qur’an Surah 16, verse 106; Surah 2, verse 87 and 253; Surah 5, verse 110.

He was the angel sent to the Virgin Mary giving her glad tidings of her pregnancy and birth of Jesus – through the will and word of God: “Be”.

You can read in the holy Qur’an the meaning of the following in Surah 19, named after Mary herself, verses 34 and 35:

*{That is Jesus, son of Maryam, in word of truth, concerning which they are wrangling. In no way is it for Allah to take Him as a child. Hymned be He! When He decrees a Command, then He only says to it: “Be!” and it is.}*

Similarly was the first human being ‘Adam’ created from earthly matter by the will and word of God “Be”. Please read the meaning of the following in Surah 3, verse 59:

*{Surely the likeness of Jesus in the Providence of Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He [Allah] created him of dust, thereafter He said to him, “Be!” so he becomes.}*

In contrast to the authentic Qur’an, the Bible is a collection of human writings that were, centuries later, considered “holy” by the Church. So we cannot accept Luke 1: 35, or any other such human statement that contradicts a proven fact of science or history, or an authentic text, or is in self-conflict with other passages of the same Bible.

Further, Luke who, a disciple of Paul – neither of Jesus nor of any of his disciples – was reflecting the Pauline version of Christianity. This was deifying Jesus as a “begotten son of God (the Highest)”, and both together with the “Holy Spirit” forming the “Trinity”, is a concept borrowed from pagan beliefs.

Please recall also that the Gospel of Luke was not written as a holy book to start with, but was rather a personal message from Luke to his friend Theophilus:

“3: Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the
beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

4: so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught”.

The “Acts” were similarly introduced:

“1: In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach

2: until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.”

It is so obvious that the writer of either or both books – Gospel of Luke and the Acts – would have never imagined that his message/s to a friend would one day be taken as a part of a “Holy” book!!

Thanks again for your feedback and if you have anything more to add, please do not hesitate to send us back.

Salaam.
